I concur with Paul. It was a great lecture. Very entertaining even for those of us who do not work close-up. Delighted I went. And to Ian I say, those of us who are not members of a magical society (I am now, but only this year) we don't mind paying extra to attend lectures. We know it costs to bring over these guys, and appreciate the efforts people go to for us. A big thank you.

A great big thank you to all who came to Cork for the David Stone lecture and i think its fair to say that David did not dissappoint. Cards, coins, comedy, charm, and fantastic magic!! David presented a top class lecture that was hugely entertaining and even if you didn't learn any magic, you certainly had a great time. We are getting some great feedback, and especially from those who were there for the master class and meal. All in all it was a highly enjoyable day filled with great magic in the company of a true artist, those who were there benefitted greatly and left with a wonderful experience.

Not sure if this is the right forum to be discussing club memberships but here's my two pence worth! We always prefer to have people coming to lectures who are already members of another magic society but if a magician takes the time to travel to Cork for a lecture then we won't be turning him away.
Remember it's the club fees that pay to bring lecturers here, it has to cover their fees, accomodation, travel, food, etc., and the cover charge on the door never comes even close to breaking even for a club. Think about this, if clubs had no members paying fees then we'd never have any lecturers, it's only through the support of loyal club members that we can afford to do these things!!

So thanks to all those magicians who go to the trouble of joining a magic society, your help and support is valued and needed much more than you will ever realise.

JC

PS We plan to organise something similar to our David Stone day soon, so watch this space there's more magic to come......

Hi All,
The David Stone lecture was indeed first class and greatly enjoyed by all magical enthuasiasts who attended. David's performance was slick and polished. His lecture was likewise, a consumate professional. More than a magician, he is an entertainer. He knows how to work a room with charm - Pazaz & confidence.

On another note:

Magicians are dedicated to magic. Politicians are dedicated to whaatever is on the menu. Both are so closely linked in terms of the job discription, it can become confusing: Misdirection - Deception - and all the rest of it. Making the unexpected appear while the expected disappears etc. etc! If only the Political aerna was so Prolific!

Magical Artists are always welcome at SBM. Terms and conditions apply but are flexible, as in keeping with most governmenmtal and statuary WTF do we do next policies.

ALL MAGIC IS REEL AND INVISIBLE THREAD WILL BE CONFICATED WHERE SEEN. OTHER THAN THAT, CORRECTLY PREDICT THE WINNING LOTTO NUMBERS AND YOU'RE IN!

Show up. Attempt. Show Magic. Aspire. Most Welcome.

Tony, I both agree, and disagree with you. I think one of the most important reasons for requiring membership of a club is the fact that these lectures are often subsidized with club fees, I question the fairness of allowing someone to not pay these fees, and still show up to the lectures at club rates. Admittedly, this issue could be solved by having a higher rate for non members.

Of course, I do very much agree that magicians who do not wish to join a club should be welcome to these lectures, and I don't know about elsewhere in the country, but in my time with the club neither John C or any of the other "leaders" of the SBM have stopped someone attending a lecture for any reason.

I am looking forward to the lecture. This thing about being a member of a recognised society is creating a bit of a problem. I know of several good magicians, doing solid work, who will not join societies because of the politics and in-fighting. I have been in that position myself. It's a shame, but we must embrace all conjurers. We should let everyone in, just as long as they are magicians. I know several members of magic societies whom no one in their right mind would suggest are actually magicians, if you know what I mean. And I know several guys who are great magicians, but who will never be in a society. See you all Saturday.

Hi Guys, all Magicians in Ireland are welcome to the Lecture. We would prefer if people were members of one of the Irish societies but if you're a Magician and you take the time and the effort to come to Cork for the Lecture we won't be turning you away from the door! The Magicians we get to come the better the lecture will be, and don't forget that we'll be having a tea/coffee reception starting about 8 o'clock so come early, have a chat, make some new friends and enjoy a great Lecture!

You normally need to be a member of a recognized magic society in Ireland but John can be pretty flexible about that (Just as long as he knows you are actually a magician), drop him an email (His email is at the bottom of the post) and see what he says.
